2nd Navigators Cup - Web Master Paris Klerides

Short Career CV

My name is Paris Klerides and I was born in Larnaca-Cyprus on the 18th of March 1970. I am an employee of the Ministry of Education since 1997 and work at a Larnaca High School. I graduated from the ''Larnaca Pancyprian Lyceum'' in 1987 and immediately completed my Military Service at the ''First Higher Military Command''.
My next step was where I studied Shipping Services and worked at various Shipping Companies in Cyprus until early 1996.  I have always endeavored to keep myself busy undertaking various activities as I am quite an energetic person.
My biggest involvement, (nearly on a professional basis), has been ‘‘Chess’’ and I have dedicated most of my life to it. I first started chess at the age of 15, learning all the moves from my Turkish-Cypriot teacher, Mr. Conny Ali Riza.  It did not take long for chess to become an obsession for me.
Unfortunately, though, various difficulties during those years as well as me being quite young, did not allow me to continue.  In 1991 though, (six years after my first lessons), I re-commenced my chess career, whilst taking part for the first time in the Cypriot Championships.  Soon after that, I had the luck, honor and joy to face the World Champion, Anatoly Karpov, in an International Tournament which took part in Limassol.  This event was a real high point in my chess career.  In the space of 4 years I was crowned Chess Champion of Cyprus twice in a row. I have been crowned Chess Champion of Cyprus five times and 17 times at ‘‘Rapid Chess’’. Whilst an integral part of the National Team of Cyprus I have taken part in all major Chess Olympiads and all European Championships.  I am still part of the National Team.  I have also taken part in many major Individual Tournaments.
My highest achievements are:  Silver Medal in the Olympics of Small Nations at Monte Carlo in 1995;  8th Place in the World at the First Chess Board of the National Team of Cyprus at the Olympiad at Erevan of Armenia in 1996;  1st Place in the World Championships at the International Corporations Tournament held in Lisbon Portugal in 2001; 2nd Place at the European Masters Championship held at Budapest Hungary in 2004 and, of course, my reaching ‘‘Master’’ status of the World Chess Federation in 2006 at the Olympics held at Turin Italy.
After this, there followed a Gold Medal at the World Blitz Championship at Fortaleza Brazil in June 2009.
For a number of years I was Rating Officer of the Cyprus Chess Federation and I am still a member today. Nowadays I am the President of the Larnaca Chess Club and a qualified Instructor of chess which allows me to run a Chess Academy in Larnaca.
I started Bowling in 2005 and in 2006 got involved in the Administration side of the sport. I am a member of the Larnaca Bowling Association Committee and have been since July 2006 and more recently, (28th June 2008), was elected as General Secretary within the Cyprus Bowling Federation.
Currently I keep myself busy at an amateur level of Web Design and the web page of the Cyprus Bowling Online is the by-product of these efforts.
